I am about ready to return the printer, but if someone has some ideas to fix it I'd rather do that. When I print ANYTHING, whether it be a PDF, test page, or LibreOffice doc, this type of thing comes out. Not a big deal as I can still scan stuff with simple-scan, but I prefer xsane because it is more powerful. I can scan from scanimage or simple-scan, but not from xsane which gives a "failed to start scanner: invalid argument" upon clicking scan. After doing some troubleshooting, I found the culprits to some of the problems and fixed it. I had a ton of trouble printing and scanning initially. Long story short, I went and built the newest version from source and got my printer recognized. I am running Mint 12, so initially it was not recognized due to Mint 12 having an older version of HPIJS than is the current release. Ok, so I bought this printer tonight and went to install it. Simple Scan gives the error "Unable to start device: Invalid argument" or it just never goes past "Processing request" and scanimage -T gives "scanimage: sane_start: Invalid argument". HOWEVER, now nothing scans at all in any program. Then, I ran 'hp-setup' from the command line and it worked! Once this was done, I went into the Mint 12 system settings printer menu and REMOVED the 5510 printer that was automatically installed. configure -with-hpppddir=/usr/share/ppd/HP -prefix=/usr -enable-udev-acl-rules -enable-qt4 -enable-doc-build -disable-cups-ppd-install -disable-foomatic-drv-install -disable-foomatic-ppd-install -disable-hpijs-install -disable-policykit -enable-cups-drv-install -enable-hpcups-install -disable-network-build -enable-dbus-build -enable-scan-build -disable-fax-build -enable-foomatic-rip-hplip-install OK, so I got the printer to print correctly by doing these steps (After downloading the newest hplip source tarball, of course): sudo make uninstall Xsane DOES NOT work (I get the error "Failed to start scanner: Invalid argument.").Scans with simple-scan and scanimage -T works. Please click “ Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution. After fiddling with some settings, I've gotten it now to this status: Have looked for answers all through HP support and have only found that HP doesn't do anything about fixing this problem.
